Why

I usually write music that’s complicated and the tracks are usually pretty long and time-consuming to make. I was getting disillusioned with that process and I felt that the stuff I was writing was no longer exciting. Remembering something I once read about a writing course where the participants were encouraged to keep a journal and write in it every morning, I thought I’d try the same thing with music; writing, recording, mixing and publishing a brand-new tune every day.

So far the experiment has been far more succesful that I expected. I have had to force myself to finish tracks that I hated and some of them have turned out to be unexpectedly lovely. I have been driven, out of desperation, to write songs using approaches that I have never tried before and I’ve had to get much faster at editing and mixing. But maybe the most valuable thing I’ve gained is a far deeper understanding of what it is that I want, musically, and that has reinvigorated my love for music.
