I used to dream of working in a bookshop when I was younger, but this blog by the man who runs the lovely one in Crystal Palace makes it sound like very hard work. He’s been posting recently about 101 Things you can’t do with Ama*on. Very funny.

Ironically the music choices on his blog all link to… Ama*on. So what about the independent record stores?
My ex-girlfriend worked in a book shop in Cheshire for a while. It was enough to convince me that it was a depressing profession. It was run by two brothers who didn’t get on. One was a (possibly) failed archeologist – miserable, tall and skinny, probably had designs on my girlfriend; the other was shorter, scruffy and laid-back, one-time roadie for 10cc, who seemed to have designs on most of the female population. He did have an interesting suggestion on how to pick up women: sit in a pavement cafe, trip them up and use it to get into a conversation. “They LOVE it!” he said.
My legendary ex-girlfriend’s working life mostly consisted of spotty youths coming in and barking “Pratchett!” or – if she got a really eloquent one – “got the latest Pratchett???”.
I knew a tattoo artist who had designs on a lot of women.
It’s not irony it’s naked commerce; I must have made, oooh, at least a tenner from the music links this year, maybe even enough to pay for a Christmas cigar.
P.S. I’d love to link to an indie music store, any suggestions?
Jon – I’ll load ‘em, you fire ‘em.
Jonathan – no idea about an indie music store, but I’d like to find one too. As for Amazon, I get an email once a year from them informing me that the amount I’ve made from links to them on one of my web sites is so small their computers cannot register it and it’ll be held over until the year 2525.
